How to Light a Fireplace Pilot Light
A common question we get is how to light one of the pilot lights in the fireplaces. Can you explain how to do that?
Pilot lights could blow out during a windstorm. They can go out. A lot of people will shut them off for the summer and then want to relight them come fall.
You’re going to look for your valve, which is typically on the right-hand side. Some are on the left. If your valve’s in the off position, reach in and turn it towards pilot. When you feel it hit the pilot position, the knob will push in just a little bit further. You’ll need a little clicker lighter like this or a match to try to relight it.
You may need to bleed some air off the lines at first, especially if it’s been off for a while. Once it’s lit, hold the knob in for anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds. Let that thermal couple heat up.
Once you’ve held it in, slowly release the knob. The pilot light should stay lit, and you just have to turn it to the on position. Then the logs will light.
If it consistently goes out and will not stay lit for an extended period, that’s when you would call us to come out and perform a service call and cleaning.”
